EVANSTON, Ill. (June 6, 2023) – A group of 12 Northwestern University student-athletes and administrators attended the 2023 Black Student-Athlete Summit (BSA) in late May. Hosted by the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, Calif., the event drew a record-setting crowd of 1,475 attendees that included student-athletes, administrators, and industry professionals from across the country.
The ‘Cats were represented by Ariel Amaya (volleyball), Brandon Clagette (men’s soccer), Jasmine McWilliams (women’s basketball), Paige Mott (women’s basketball), Cam Porter (football), Chloe Relford (field hockey), Kenny Soares Jr. (football), and Anthony Tyus III (football).
In addition to the student-athlete contingent, Associate Director of Academic Services Candyce Boney, Assistant Director of Career Enhancement & Employer Relations for the David G. Kabiller NU for Life Program Ahmad Boyd, Academic Advisor and Director of Student-Athlete Development Myisha Jennings, and Senior Associate A.D. and Chief Diversity & Inclusion Officer Maria Sanchez also were in attendance.
The BSA Summit is centered around empowering Black student-athletes, coaches, and administrators by placing an emphasis on community empowerment, mental health, social impact, identity development, and career preparation.
“The BSA Summit was an amazing experience,” Amaya commented. “It is so valuable to be able to network, fellowship, and learn from individuals who have been where I am now and have gone on to do so much to grow our community. I am excited to bring the advice and ideas we discussed back to my University and apply them to my educational and professional career.”
Over the course of the three-day event, student-athletes were provided the opportunity to engage with counterparts from across the country, along with industry professionals and researchers. Student-athletes learned how to maximize opportunities through both athletic and academic success through a career combine, pro day, and corporate recruiting fair.
The BSA Summit also featured a variety of breakout sessions for student-athletes and professionals, as well as presentations by multiple keynote speakers, including Lesley Slaton Brown, NBA Chief Diversity and Inclusion Officer, and Rich Paul, CEO of Klutch Sports Group.
