#13 Lewis Women's Volleyball Sweeps Maryville Friday


ST. LOUIS, Mo. — The No. 13 Lewis University women’s volleyball team swept Maryville 3-0 Friday (Oct. 27). With the win, the Flyers increased its current winning streak to five matches.

SET BREAKDOWN
Set 1: Lewis 25, Maryville 21
Lewis fell slightly behind early, 3-5, but came charging back with a 5-1 run on four kills, two by Ray, who also provided a service ace. Later in the set, Maryville went on a 7-2 charge behind five kills to grab a 14-11 advantage.
 
The Flyers got the set even with a 3-0 outburst, and later a 4-0 push featuring two kills and a block put Lewis ahead, 20-18. The Saints were unable to take the lead for the remainder of the set, with the Flyers finishing strong on a 5-2 run. Hannah Alvey (Mapleton, Ill./Illinois Central College) had the kill on set point as Lewis hit .326 in the opening frame.
 
Set 2: Lewis 25, Maryville 23
Maryville came out hot with a 3-0 start to the second set, but Lewis bounced back with a 3-0 run of its own with one kill and two blocks. The Flyers took its first lead of the set, 7-6, on an ace by Fornetti, but the Saints responded with a 3-1 push.
 
A kill and ace by Stenman started a 5-1 burst for Lewis, and two kills by Van Loo finished it with the Flyers up 13-10. Maryville immediately responded with a 6-1 run to regain the advantage.
 
The set continued with big swings for both teams as Lewis used a 5-1 run with two kills and two aces before a 3-0 push by Maryville gave the Saints a slim 21-20 lead. The Flyers then finished off the set with a 5-2 run, with Alvey once again having the kill to complete the set.
 
Set 3: Lewis 25, Maryville 11
Lewis struggled at the outset of set three, with three consecutive attack errors to spot Maryville a 4-0 lead, but the Flyers then took off to close the match strong.
