#16 Volleyball Heads to San Diego for Three Matchups


TEMPE – The non-conference road trips continue for No. 16 Sun Devil Volleyball as the team heads to California for a tournament hosted by the University of San Diego this weekend.

How to Follow

All three matches this weekend will be at Jenny Craig Pavilion. Arizona State will face UC Santa Barbara to start the tournament on Friday at 4 p.m. PDT/MST before taking on the host team San Diego on Saturday at 6 p.m. PDT/MST. The weekend will conclude with a matchup against St. John’s on Sunday at noon PDT/MST. 

Only the match against the Toreros on Saturday will be on ESPN+; the others will not be streamed. There will be live stats for all matches. Updates will be provided on social media as well on X (@SunDevilVB) and Instagram (@sundevilvolleyball).

Sun Devil Outlook

No. 16 Arizona State (3-0)

  • The Sun Devils started the 2024 season with a 3-0 weekend at the LUV Invitational at Lipscomb, beating the host team, Butler and Cal Baptist. ASU has not lost a non-conference match since September 16, 2022. 
  • Arizona State moved up one spot in the AVCA Coaches Poll to No. 16. This is the 12th-consecutive poll the Sun Devils have been ranked in.
  • It was a big opening weekend for four-year Sun Devils Geli Cyr and Claire Jeter. Cyr, a senior outside hitter, was named the LUV Invitational MVP after notching a total of 37 kills over three matches on a .386 clip. Jeter, a graduate middle blocker, earned a spot on the all-tournament team after hitting a blistering .714 on the weekend, totaling 25 kills, the second-highest team total. Jeter’s hitting percentage is the second-best in the Big 12.
  • Many new faces made their debuts last weekend. The three transfers all saw playing time. Graduates Argentina Ung and Savannah Kjolhede played at setter and middle blocker, respectively, while junior pin hitter Bailey Miller saw time as well. 
  • Two made their collegiate debuts last Friday. Redshirt freshman setter Brynn Covell saw time as a utility player, serving up seven aces and 18 total digs between three matches. Freshman defensive specialist Bella Faria played in five sets, earning two digs.

Opponent Outlook

UC Santa Barbara (1-2)

  • The Gauchos started the season at the FSU Invitational, falling to ranked teams Georgia and Florida State before beating South Florida in four sets.
