MADISON, Wis. – The schedule is set for the reigning NCAA champion Wisconsin volleyball team to defend its title in 2022. The Badgers play a total of 28 regular-season matches, including 13 matches vs. teams ranked in the final 2021 American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Top 25 Coaches poll.
Â
“The new season is right around the corner and we are certainly looking forward to getting started,” head coach Kelly Sheffield said. “TCU and Baylor on the road is a tremendous challenge and opportunity right out of the gate, and then to go down to play a great Kentucky team for our second trip is going to be another battle.Â
Â
“We think our fans our going to be pretty excited and fired up for things at home as well. The first thing fans will notice is some of the upgrades that have been happening at the Field House over the spring and summer. And then the banner drops for our home opener against Marquette and a match at the Kohl Center against perennial power Florida, where we are hoping to break the NCAA regular-season attendance record. And then the Big Ten is the Big Ten; great teams every weekend.”
Â
Wisconsin plays eight non-conference matches, including four home contests. The Badgers open their home season on Sept. 2 vs. in-state rival Marquette when they will drop banners for the 2021 NCAA Championship and 2021 Big Ten Conference Championship.
Â
For the first time since the 1998 season, UW hosts a match in the Kohl Center when Florida comes to town on Sept. 16. Wisconsin is looking to break the regular-season attendance record of 14,022 set on Sept. 6, 2018, when Creighton faced Nebraska at the CHI Health Center Arena in Omaha, Nebraska.
Â
The Big Ten season opens on Sept. 23 when Wisconsin hosts Northwestern in the 32nd-annual Steve Lowe Night in the UW Field House. Other notable home matches include contests vs. perennial powers Penn State, Nebraska and Minnesota.
