CHINA CAPTURE STRAIGHT SETS ON KOREA TO OPEN AVC CUP FOR WOMEN

August 21, 2022, Pasig City, Philippines – Title-holders China opened their bid on Pool A of the preliminary round of the 2022 AVC Cup for Women with 3-0 win (25-9, 25-8, 25-9) against Korea at the PhilSports Arena.

China coach Kuang Qi noted “We prepared well for such an encounter match. I think the Korean team was not able to play as well as they expected.”

Outside hitter Zhuang Yushan bested all scorers with 13 points from 11 attacks and 2 service aces. opposite Zhou Yetong (11 points) and middle blocker Hu Mingyuan (10 points) likewise figure in double-digits in Sunday’s victory.

The rest of the Chinese side played a commendable match, ensuring efficiency in nearly every aspect of the game. They maintained their offensive rhythm in their passing lanes, while posting good defense on both first and second lines.

With their tall line-up, the Chinese blockers took the advantage up by the net, scoring off a total of 10 deflections. Middle blocker Hu Mingyuan ran the middle game well, as she likewise connected with her attacks.

What mostly mattered for the Chinese side was how they managed to initiate their good all-around play from the service line. They loaded their serves strategically to cause a disjoint in their opponents’ passing unit. They even scored off instantly, tallying several aces with setter Sun Haiping’s amazing run from the service area.

Even while opposite Choi Hosun was working hard at the wing, the Korean side has been unable to establish an efficient tempo that would utilize their players’ individual qualities.

China eventually closed out the match with 9 aces.

As the winningest team in the competition’s history, taking a total of five titles (2008, 2010, 2014, 2016, 2018), the Chinese side will look to add another trophy in the 7th edition as hosted in the Philippines.

“There are more games in front of us and we have to keep up the good work,” added Kuang Qi.

China will then play Vietnam in Monday’s (August 22) first match at 13:00 local time, while Korea will face Iran in the final match at 19:00 local time.
