PORTLAND, Ore. – The No. 19 Oregon volleyball team swept its way past host Portland State to wrap up the season-opening Rose City Showdown Sunday afternoon at Viking Pavilion. Freshman Mimi Colyer led all players with 13 kills, followed closely by 12 kills from Brooke Nuneviller. Coupled with Saturday’s win, the Ducks are 2-0 heading back to Eugene for next weekend’s home opener.
Collectively, the UO offense hit .400 with setter Hannah Pukis running the show with her second double-double—32 assists, 12 digs—in as many matches this weekend. The Ducks’ defense, in turn, limited PSU to a -.047 hitting percentage, helped in part by nine total team blocks.
How It Happened
From 2-all in the first set, Oregon went on a 7-1 run to gain control of play and force the home team into an early timeout. The Ducks pushed their lead to double figures—up 18-8—after kill by Gloria Mutiri, her first of the afternoon. On the team’s second set point, Karson Bacon found the final third of the court to secure the opener (25-12) for a 1-0 match lead.
Oregon continued to control the flow of play, jumping out to a 9-2 advantage in the second set. Portland State (1-2) pulled to within three with the Ducks leading 11-8 but never got any closer. With the help of a six-point surge, the lead was 21-10 after back-to-back kills from Kiari Robey and Nuneviller. The Ducks wrapped up the set with an identical score of 25-12 with a kill by Mutiri.
