COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 5 Ohio State Buckeyes (4-4) fell short at No. 12 Pitt (9-2) on Sunday afternoon to wrap up the non-conference schedule in three sets (21-25, 15-25, 22-25).
Pitt took the first set by a 25-21 margin after leading the close set throughout. The Panthers used a 9-0 run to end the second set with a 25-15 score. The third set was tight the entire time and tied at 22 before a won challenge gave Pitt the final three points to finish the match with a 25-22 third set.
How it Happened
Pitt got on the board with the first two points. Ohio State tied the set at two with a block from Adria Powell and Emily Londot, but the Panthers strung together four-unanswered points to take an 8-4 lead. A pair of kills from Reilly MacNeill were part of a 4-0 Buckeyes response to tie the set at eight. Pitt scored four of five points heading into the media timeout with the 15-12 advantage. The teams traded points out of the media timeout before back-to-back Buckeye kills got them within two points at 21-19. Ohio State called timeout trailing 23-20 and fell by a 25-21 mark in the set.
The Panthers scored first in the second set as well. Four different Buckeyes had kills in the set as OSU trailed Pitt by a 5-4 mark. After a successful challenge gave the Panthers a 9-6 advantage, the Buckeyes put together a 4-1 run to tie the set at 10. A kill from Jenaisya Moore gave OSU its first lead of the match at 11-10. Pitt called timeout following a 4-0 OSU run as the Buckeyes led 12-10. The Panthers responded with their own 4-0 run to take the lead back out of the timeout. Ohio State took a timeout trailing 19-15 after three-consecutive Pitt points. The Panthers continued their run to 6-0, leading 22-15 to prompt another Buckeye timeout. Pitt won the set by a 25-15 mark.
Pitt scored the first two points of the third set, but Ohio State tied the set at two. Londot had an early three kills in the set as the Buckeyes held the early 4-3 advantage. Neither team scored consecutive points until a 4-0 Ohio State run put the Buckeyes up 11-7. Pitt responded to tie the set at 12 with three-unanswered points and continued the run to 6-0 to lead 15-12 before an OSU point. The Buckeyes got back within one at 16-15 before back-to-back kills from Londot gave the Buckeyes the narrow 18-17 lead. OSU took a timeout down 21-19 after two Pitt points but bounced back with three of the next four points to tie the set at 22, forcing a Panthers’ timeout….
