Duke Rallies Past Clemson in Five Sets

DURHAM –  The Duke volleyball team outlasted Clemson, 3-2 (29-27, 17-25, 20-25, 25-16, 15-9), in a marathon match Sunday afternoon at Cameron Indoor Stadium.  

How it Happened 

  • Three Blue Devils tallied double-digit kills while two collected double-double performances en route to Duke’s second ACC victory this fall.
  • Duke was led offensively by Gracie Johnson and Kerry Keefe with 21 kills each as they hit .250 and .370 percent, respectively. Johnson also added five aces, 13 digs and three blocks in her all-around performance. Setter Devon Chang dished 51 assists while libero Nikki Underwood added a career-high 26 digs. As a team, Duke tallied 26 blocks for 14.0 total team blocks, led by career performances from Rylie Kadel (10) and Chang (7). 
  • The first set featured 11 tie scores and set the pace for what would be a marathon match. Both squads came out with decent hitting percentages as Chang dished 16 quick assists and added two blocks. 
  • Clemson posted a .452 hitting percentage in the second to even the match, 1-1. 
  • The Tigers carried their momentum into the third set and took a 2-1 lead as they hit .421. Johnson’s swing started to come alive in this frame as she tallied five kills to hit .400 while Kadel added two kills and two blocks. 
  • Duke regained control in the fourth set with a commanding 23-14 lead with 10 block assists to shut down Clemson’s offensive rhythm. Keefe tallied three kills and no errors on four swings to hit .750 while Johnson added two aces.
