Red Dragons Post Sweep at Oneonta, Remain Unbeaten in League Play

ONEONTA, N.Y. – The Cortland women’s volleyball team moved a step closer to a possible SUNYAC regular-season title with a 25-15, 25-18, 25-20 sweep at Oneonta.

Cortland improved to 16-4 overall and 8-0 in league play, setting up a matchup Saturday at 1 p.m. at New Paltz to close out the conference schedule. New Paltz is 18-2 overall and 7-1 in the league, tied for second with Brockport. Cortland can clinch the SUNYAC top seed with a win Saturday, or even possibly with a five-set loss if other tiebreakers work in the Red Dragons’ favor. The regular-season champ earns a bye into the semifinals of the six-team SUNYAC tournament and will host the semifinals and finals Nov. 4-5. The second seed also earns a bye into the semifinals, and the third and fourth seeds host first-round matches Nov. 1.

 

Allie Sturgess (Stony Brook/Ward Melville) led Cortland with 10 kills and four digs and Giovanna Rossi (Nichols/Tioga Central) had nine kills and three digs. Zoe Staats (Buchanan/Hendrick Hudson) added seven kills and Emma Reilly (Massapequa Park) finished with six kills and no errors in seven attempts for an .857 attack percentage.

 

Meadow Wittman (Colden/Springville Griffith Institute) led the guests with 17 assists and added five digs. Ryan Hinshaw (Aurora, IL/Joliet Catholic Academy) totaled 12 assists, three kills and four digs and Carly Haegele (Commack) served three aces and had six digs. Mikenzie Martens (Carthage) led the team with 20 digs. Martens and Danielle Fisk (Honeoye Falls/Honeoye Falls-Lima) each had two aces, while Fisk and Anna Pilkey (Ballston Spa) each registered three block…
