AUBURN, Ala. – In its final October match, the Tennessee volleyball team fell to Auburn in four sets (15-25, 13-25, 29-27, 25-27) Friday night at Neville Arena.
Tennessee (10-11, 4-5 SEC) was unable to find consistent offense in sets one and two and fell into an early hole as the Tigers won the first two frames. UT turned things around in three and four – winning set three – but fell just short of forcing a fifth set as Auburn held on to take the fourth.
Senior Morgahn Fingall was back in action Friday night and led the team in kills with 20. She finished with a double-double as the right-side attacker also picked up 12 digs.
Erykah Lovett finished with double-digit kills as she scored 13 and earned her eighth double-double of the year with 11 digs.
Auburn (18-2, 7-2 SEC) was led by Akasha Anderson who put down 20 kills. She was followed by Madison Scheer at 11. The Tigers put away 56 kills and hit .320 to UT’s 51 kills and .152 hitting percentage.
The Lady Vols suffered 10 attack errors in the opening frame, while Auburn started fast with 11 kills and just three attack errors. Six players tallied at least one kill in the first set for Auburn as it took the opener, 25-15.
The second set was more of the same with Auburn clicking on the offensive end with 16 kills and a .389 hit rate. Scheer led the Tigers with five kills as they took the set, 25-13.
With a .389 hitting percentage and 17 kills in the third, UT bounced back and forced a fourth set as it won the third, 29-27. Lovett led the way with eight kills and was closely followed by Fingall who put down six.
The frame was marked by extended runs for each team, beginning with Tennessee who outscored Auburn 11-5 in the middle of the set to take a 15-10 lead. The Tigers then went on an 8-0 run late in the frame to take a one-point lead at 23-22.
After UT regained the advantage at 24-23, the teams exchanged the following eight points before an ace from Lovett ended the third and gave Tennessee the win.
In the fourth, UT took a 15-12 lead into the media timeout, but Auburn whittled away with a 9-3 run to claim the lead. Late in the set, the Lady Vols pushed back and fought off set point three times as they used a 5-0 run to retake the lead at 25-24.
Auburn then fought off set point itself to draw level before back-to-back attack errors from Tennessee gave the Tigers the win, 27-25.
