DURHAM – The Duke volleyball team dropped a 3-1 match (23-25, 25-18, 20-25, 19-25) to North Carolina Sunday afternoon at Cameron Indoor Stadium.
How it Happened
- Three Tar Heels registered double-digit kills and two double-doubles, led by Mabrey Shaffmaster, who tallied 18 kills and 11 digs.
- Duke was led offensively by Gracie Johnson with 16 kills and just six errors to hit .217. She also added three aces, eight digs and two blocks. Rachel Richardson added 11 kills while setter Devon Chang dished 47 assists. Georgia Stavrinides led the blocking unit with six blocks, followed by Taylor Atkinson and Rylie Kadel with five and four, respectively. Libero Nikki Underwood added 13 digs.
- North Carolina jumped out to an early 1-0 lead with help from a .278 hitting percentage in the first set. Duke trailed 24-18 late, but used a 5-0 run as Atkinson’s swing came alive, but couldn’t close out the set.
- The second frame saw Duke’s blocking contingent come alive with six block assists to help limit the Tar Heels to a .059 percentage. Johnson tallied seven kills for .583 percent and an ace from Richardson and Sydney Yap helped tie up the match, 1-1.
- North Carolina hit .308 in the third to take a 2-1 lead before securing the match in the fourth set as Shaffmaster and Liv Mogridge combined for 10 kills in the fourth.
