EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State volleyball dropped a five set nail-biter on Sunday afternoon, falling to Indiana, 3-2 (25-23, 19-25, 25-20, 13-25, 13-15). The Spartans led late in the fifth set, but the Hoosiers closed the match on a 4-1 run.
Michigan State hit .188 overall, hitting a team-best .353 in the deciding fifth set. Indiana hit .226 and out-blocked the Spartans 15-6. MSU held Indiana’s offense to a -.029 hitting percentage in set three.
Sophomore Aliyah Moore led the match with 16 kills, while sophomore Grace Kelly posted a career-high 10 for Michigan State coming off the bench in set two. Fifth year Zoe Nunez tallied her fifth double-double of the season and second in as many games, leading the Spartans with 35 assists, 11 digs and four blocks. Nunez tied her season-high with four blocks on Sunday. Junior Nalani Iosia came close to a double-double of her own with eight digs and seven assists.
Indiana led 12-11 nearing the mid-way point of the first set, but a 5-1 run from the Spartans gave MSU the 16-13 edge that it would maintain throughout the remainder of the set. Michigan State led by as many as five points in set one before a 4-0 Hoosier run late cut that lead to one at 23-22. Fifth year Rebecka Poljan’s fourth kill of the set sealed the deal for MSU.
The Hoosiers took an early 10-3 lead over Michigan State in set two, but the Spartans clawed back with a 12-4 run that saw them take a 15-14 lead. Indiana responded with a 7-1 run of its own to take back a 21-16 lead for MSU and eventually win the set.
