Men's Soccer, Volleyball Set for Playoffs

Two Muhlenberg fall teams will begin their postseason this week on the road against teams they just played.

The Mule men’s soccer and volleyball teams both qualified for the Centennial Conference playoffs, which have a new format this year. The fields for each sport were expanded to six teams, with the top four seeds earning the right to host a game, instead of the top seed hosting the semifinals and championship.

Men’s soccer (6-5-6, 3-1-5) earned the fifth seed and will travel to fourth-seeded Gettysburg (9-3-5, 4-2-3) for a first-round game on Tuesday, November 1, at 7:00. Volleyball (13-12, 5-5) earned the sixth seed and will open at third-seeded Franklin & Marshall (16-8, 8-2) on Wednesday, November 2, at 7:00.

In the year when the NCAA eliminated overtime in regular-season matches, the Mules tied a school record with six ties, ending the regular season with three straight draws, including a 1-1 stalemate at Gettysburg on Saturday.

Muhlenberg is in the CC playoffs for the first time since 2014, when it won the CC championship and advanced to the “Sweet 16” of the NCAA Tournament. The Mules are 10-1-1 in their last 12 postseason games, including a 7-0 mark the last two seasons, when they won the 2019 and 2021 ECAC championships.

Muhlenberg has an all-time record of 8-7-2 in CC playoff games, including a 2-0-1 mark against Gettysburg. The last time the two teams played in the first round of the CC playoffs, in 2006, the game ended in a 1-1 tie and went to a shootout, where the Bullets prevailed, 8-7.

The Mules rank second in CC history with six championships. Gettysburg, ranked fifth in Region V by United Soccer Coaches and seventh by the NCAA, is seeking its fourth title, and its first since 2001. The Bullets are in the playoffs for the fourth straight season and reached the championship match last year, falling to Washington.
