PALO ALTO, Calif. – Arizona was swept by No. 8 Stanford, 17-25, 19-25, 23-25, on Saturday afternoon. Despite the Cats out-blocking Stanford 9.0 blocks to 6.0 blocks, the Cardinal held Arizona to a .154 hitting percentage.
Jaelyn Hodge and Sofia Maldonado Diaz had nine kills each to lead Arizona’s offense. The Wildcats had 9.0 blocks, led by Zyonna Fellows with six blocks and Maldonado Diaz had three blocks.
Stanford won the first set, 25-17. The Wildcats kept the beginning of the set close, but Stanford pulled away at 13-15 and held the lead the rest of the set. Maldonado Diaz had four kills to lead the Cats in Set 1.
Arizona fell 19-25 in the second set. The Cats fought off four set points but couldn’t complete the comeback. Hodge had four kills and a .500 clip, but Stanford tallied 20 kills in the set to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
The Cardinal won the match with a 25-23 win in the third set. Arizona had four blocks and served two aces to keep the set close and held the lead three times at the end of the set. Although the Wildcats almost forced a fourth set, Stanford looked to Kendall Kipp to knock down the match-winning kill.
Arizona returns home to host Colorado on Wednesday, Nov. 23 at 1 p.m. for Senior Day. The Cats will then face Arizona State in Tempe on Saturday, Nov. 26 at 4 p.m. MST.
