DURHAM – The Duke volleyball team dropped a hard-fought 3-2 match (26-24, 17-25, 25-23, 31-33, 13-15) to Miami Sunday afternoon at Cameron Indoor Stadium.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Duke was once again led offensively by Gracie Johnson with 24 kills, followed by Rylie Kadel and Kerry Keefe with 12 each. Setter Devon Chang dished 54 dimes while three players registered double-digit digs: Nikki Underwood (32), Chang (16) and Johnson (14). At the net, five players tallied three-or-more blocks, led by Kadel with an impressive 8, followed by Lizzie Fleming (4), Chang (4), Keefe (3) and Rachel Richardson (3).
- Johnson came out hot to start the match with 10 kills and a .562 hitting percentage as Duke took an early 1-0 lead.
- Miami responded in the second set to tie the match (1-1). As a team, the Hurricanes hit .281 percent as Angela Grieve posted six kills and a .357 clip. Fleming and Keefe headlined Duke’s offense with two kills and no errors each.
- Both teams struggled to find their offensive rhythms in the third but Richardson provided a big spark off the bench for the Blue Devils. She tallied five kills and just one error on nine swings to hit .444 and helped push Duke to a 2-1 lead.
- The fourth frame featured 18 tie scores and four lead changes in an absolute back-and-forth affair. Miami fought off six Duke match points as it hit .200 for the set, led by Grieves and Janice Leao with five kills apiece.
