HARRISONBURG, Va. – EMU Director of Athletics Carrie S. Bert has announced the hiring of Omar Hoyos as the next men’s volleyball head coach.
“I’m thrilled to have Omar Hoyos join our Royals staff as the head men’s volleyball coach,” Bert said. “This team has been patient throughout the hiring process, and I believe the wait has been worth it. Omar’s passion for athletics and developing student athletes through the sport of volleyball is clear. He connected well with the players while on campus and they are excited to be in the gym and get to work with Omar’s leadership.”
Prior to coming to EMU, Hoyos was the head girls varsity volleyball coach at Archbishop McCarthy High School in Southwest Ranches, Florida. After taking over as the head coach in 2019, he led the Mavericks to a district championship and a regional semi-final birth in 2020 and 2021 and a district runner-up and regional semi-final finish in 2022. All three seasons, Archbishop McCarthy was ranked as a top-five girls volleyball team in the state of Florida, ranking third during the 2022 season. During those three years, he was also the head coach at the Wildfire Volleyball Academy. During the 2020-21 season, he coached the 16U Girls National Team and in 2021-22 he was the head of the 18U Girls National Team.
From 2016 to 2020, Hoyos was a coach at the MVP Volleyball Academy in Florida. For the 2016-17 season, he was the Head Coach of the 14U Boys team and the first assistant for the 17U Boys team. The 17U team was the top-ranked team in Florida and the East Coach and finished fifth in the Gold Open Division at the USA Volleyball Boys Junior National Championship. He moved up to first assistant for the 18U Boys team in 2017-18, where the team was the number one ranked team in Florida and the East Coast and picked up another fifth-place finish at the USAV BJNC.
Hoyos became the head coach of the 18U Boys team in 2018-19 where he led them to an AAU Open Division National Championship. During that season, they were once again the top-ranked team in Florida and the East Coast. They won first place at the Florida Fest Boys Bid Tournament for USAV Nationals and were third at the Boys Winter Volleyball Championships in Chicago. His final season at the MVP Volleyball Academy saw his 18U team ranked first in the state of Florida and grabbing a second-place finish at the Florida Fest Boys Bid Tournament.
