THE FLATS – Georgia Tech volleyball’s junior defensive specialist Liz Patterson has been named a Stamps President’s Scholar through the walk-on program, the Office of Special Scholarships announced on Thursday. Patterson is one of just three recipients joining the Stamps family of scholars and the first DI student-athlete to ever receive the honor as part of the walk-on program.
In becoming a recipient of the prestigious scholarship as a third-year undergraduate, Patterson was recognized unknowingly for her visible and significant contributions by a closed group of nominators rather than applying directly for the opportunity. As an honoree, the Birmingham, Ala., native exemplifies program pillars of scholarship, leadership, progress and service. Patterson will receive full funding beginning in the spring and join the Stamps President’s Scholars program immediately.
Recently concluding her third season of competition on The Flats, Patterson is pursuing a business administration degree with a concentration in finance. On top of her athletic responsibilities, the esteemed Yellow Jacket serves as vice president of the Student Athlete Advisory Board. Patterson also represents Georgia Tech on the conference level on the ACC SAAC Executive Board as the service chair. Following her internship next summer with Northwestern Mutual, the new Stamps President’s Scholar will decide to continue in the workforce after graduation or pursue a postgraduate degree.
About the Stamps President’s Scholarship
Stamps President’s Scholars receive a full-ride scholarship, but the program is about much more than funding. The four-year participatory program develops scholars and enriches their experience. The ultimate goal of the program is to create leaders who are guided by the perspective gained from these experiences and will make it a point throughout their lifetimes to pay forward the benefits and inspiration they have received.
The full program includes:
- A full-ride scholarship covering tuition, mandatory fees, housing, meal plan, books and academic supplies, personal expenses and a stipend during the first year for a laptop.
- $12,000 enrichment funding for pillar-based international experiences, unpaid internships, unpaid research, conferences, etc.
- Mentoring for each cohort by two dedicated professors known as Faculty Guides.
