CHESTER, Pa. – The Elmira College men’s volleyball team found itself in its second five-set thriller of the season, this time coming out on top using a reverse sweep to defeat the Pride of Widener University on Friday evening. After dropping the first two sets, the Soaring Eagles found themselves trailing in the third before scoring 13 of the final 19 points to force a fourth.
From there, the Purple & Gold quickly gained control of the momentum, hitting .385% with 15 kills in the third to even the match at 2-2. In the fifth, Elmira went on to score ten of the first 15 points and wouldn’t look back on its way to picking up the victory in the match, 3-2.

As a team, the Soaring Eagles would hit. 314% (60 kills, 22 errors) compared to .217% for the Pride (44 kills, 21 errors). Elmira, who is hitting .276% as a team this season, has outkilled its opponents by 82 through five games (16.4/game).
Each team would produce seven service aces this evening, led by Ryan Mattes ’23 with four, while reigning UVC and Empire 8 Player of the Week Alberto Mauricio ’25 finished the contest with 21 kills and ten digs. Max Cohen ’25 would finish with 52 assists, while Oscar Munoz Trinidad ’23 finished with 19 kills.
