Astana, Kazakhstan, 6 July 2023 – Iran are first to book their finals ticket in the women’s competition of the 2023 WPV Sitting Volleyball Asian Zone Championships, after a straight-sets defeat of Japan, 3-0 (25-16, 25-7, 25-12) on Thursday afternoon at the Jekpe-Jek Sports Centre.
Iran went into an aggressive start, rushing into a 6-0 lead to open the match. Japan tried to turn things around, heading into scoring run, inching closer to the opponents. Iran called for time, protecting a narrow lead at 11-8, which proved useful to boost their momentum towards 25-16 in the first set.
The Iran side continued to play with much focus and precision, mounting a huge 14-1 lead in the second set. Japan called in a player change in the hopes of sparking a turn-around. However, Iran possessed not only the advantage in serve and attack, but also the surge of confidence to bring in a 25-7 win in set two.
Japan needed to find solutions in the third set, as they played along the pace of their opponents. This time, they could manage to side-out more, but later suffered the misfortune, mostly, of haywire hits.
Iran started steaming ahead, all the way to a 25-12 finish, wanting to punch that Paris 2024 Paralympics ticket, by taking the first semis slot in the Zonals in the Kazakh capital city.
Iran assistant coach Tahereh Sadeghian commented: We have a very good development program in our federation in order to promote the level of our team. Fortunately, they support us in order to find some new talents, very young players and right now, we are in a good level that could easily defeat Japan. We are hoping for a win in the final match.”
