Men’s Volleyball | August 16, 2023
LOS ANGELES – USC men’s volleyball has signed transfer setter Josh Friedman (Newport Beach, Calif./Corona del Mar HS/Orange Coast College) from the University of Hawai’i, head coach Jeff Nygaard announced on Wednesday, August 16.
Friedman spent his sophomore year at Hawai’i where he was named to the Big West Commissioner’s Honor Roll but did not see action on the court. Prior to joining the Warriors, he attended Orange Coast College for two years where he started in 2022 to help OCC win the CCCAA State Championship. Friedman led the league in assists per set and was chosen to the CCCAA All-Tournament Team and to the All-State and All-Orange Empire Conference first teams. He redshirted the 2021 season due to the COVID shutdown.
Friedman prepped at Corona del Mar HS where he lettered in volleyball and took his team to a runner-up finish at the Best of the West tournament. He was born in Newport Beach, Calif., to Mark and Gale Friedman and intends to major in psychology at USC. His father Mark played tennis collegiately for Michigan (1977) and played in on the pro tour for several years.
The 12th-ranked USC men’s volleyball team concluded the 2023 season with a 10-16 overall record and went 3-9 in MPSF matches to finish in sixth place. USC faced Stanford in the opening round of the MPSF tournament but was eliminated by the Cardinal in four sets. In its history, the USC men’s volleyball program has captured four NCAA championships while appearing in 15 NCAA tournaments and has produced 21 Olympians, 34 first-team All-Americans, and seven College Players of the Year.
