Urmia, Iran, August 20, 2023 – Qatar sent Afghanistan packing in convincing straight sets 25-19, 25-16, 25-19 in their Pool E clash of the 22nd Asian Senior Men’s Volleyball Championship at Al-Ghadir Hall 1 on Sunday.
In-form Qatar, which overcame India 3-0 in their opening match on Saturday, proved a class above Afghanistan to record their second win in the topflight competition to secure their berth to the next round.
Papemaguette Diagne and Ribeiro Renan chipped in with 11 and 9 points respectively for Qatar, while Mohammad Sabawoon Wardak led Afghanistan with 10 points.
Qatar started very well, with Youssef Oughlaf, and Ribeiro Renan coming up with impressive offensive combinations. Afghanistan tried to reduce the gap after trailing 10-16 but found the going was tough. The Qataris went on their spectacular attacks, while the Afghans became more prone to unforced mistakes. Qatar wrapped up the first set 25-19.
In the second set, both sides tried their best using all they had to win the set, but Qatar came into the set full of confidence and stayed in front by wide margin 16-8. Despite the determined efforts from the rivals, the Qataris played cool, never looking back from there to capture the set 25-16.
Both sides started with almost the same level in the third set as the score was interchanging one by one before the Qataris broke away netting some crucial points from their exceptional spikes. Qatar advanced 14-9, stretched it to 22-17 and allowed the rivals only two more points to win the third set 25-19 and match.
