Burns promoted from assistant to head coach at Rockford

Top-ranked and defending national champion Juniata is among just three teams that maintained their preseason position in the first AVCA poll of the 2023 season.

Juniata is followed by No. 2 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, No. 3 Hope, No. 4 Calvin and No. 5 Northwestern.

Rounding out the top 10 are No. 6 Trinity (Texas), No. 7 Johns Hopkins, No. 8 Wisconsin-Oshkosh, No. 9 Wisconsin-Whitewater and No. 10 Berry. Juniata, Northwestern and No. 14 Washington-St. Louis were the only programs to stay in their preseason poll positions.

Other Region VIII/IX teams in the Week 1 top 25: No. 15 Wisconsin-Stevens Point; No. 16 Transylvania; No. 18 Gustavus Adolphus; No. 23 Coe; No. 24 Cornell.

Region VIII/IX teams receiving votes this week: Wisconsin-Eau Claire; Mount St. Joseph; North Park; Chicago; Millikin; Augustana; St. Olaf; North Central (Ill.); Wisconsin-Platteville.

My Week 1 top 10 had Washington-St. Louis and Wisconsin-Stevens Point instead of the AVCA’s Trinity (Texas) and Berry.
