Anna Pilkey and Mikenzie Martens Chosen for SUNYAC Volleyball Weekly Honors


Cortland junior right side hitter Anna Pilkey (Ballston Spa) and junior libero Mikenzie Martens (Carthage) has been selected as the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Women’s Volleyball Offensive and Defensive Athletes of the Week, respectively, for the week ending Sept. 24.

Pilkey was named the MVP at the William Smith Heron Invitational after leading Cortland to a 3-0 record and the tournament title. She finished the weekend with 37 kills (3.1 per set) and 45 digs (3.8 per set) and had a .172 attack percentage. Pilkey opened the weekend with 11 kills and 20 digs in a five-set win over William Smith. She posted 12 kills and 15 digs in a four-set win over Stevens Institute on Saturday, followed by 14 kills, 10 digs and three aces in a sweep of St. John Fisher. Five of her kills versus St. John Fisher fought off set points in the second set.

 

Pilkey leads Cortland with 137 kills (2.9 per set) in 12 matches this season. She has a .215 attack percentage along with 126 digs and 15 aces.

 

Martens earned the league’s Defensive Athlete of the Week award for the second time this fall. She was named to the all-tournament team at William Smith after averaging 4.6 digs per set in 12 sets over three matches. Martens totaled 22 digs and four aces in a five-set win over William Smith on Friday, and the following day she posted 15 digs and two aces in a four-set win over Stevens Institute and 18 digs in a sweep of St. John Fisher.

 

Martens has a team-best 179 digs (five per set) and 15 aces in nine matches this season.

 

Cortland (10-2) begins SUNYAC play Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Oswego. The Red Dragons are also scheduled for non-league matches Friday at Hamilton at 6 p.m. and home versus Eastern University Saturday at 1 p.m.
