Men’s Volleyball | September 25, 2023
LOS ANGELES – The USC men’s volleyball team has hired Paul Martinez—previously the program’s volunteer assistant for the last two seasons—to serve as a full-time assistant coach, head coach Jeff Nygaard announced on Monday, Sept. 25.
“We are thrilled to be able to add Paul to our full-time staff this season,” said Nygaard. “While he has served as our volunteer coach the last several years, his contribution to our program is felt in so many areas. Paul’s volleyball acumen and the way he interacts and engages our student-athletes are such valuable assets to our team. It was only a matter of time before he would take the next steps in his coaching career and I’m so happy that he will be able to do that with the Trojans.”
In his role, Martinez will be responsible for the Trojan defense and servers and will handle the program’s scheduling and logistical processes. Martinez first joined the program in the fall of 2021 and served as the team’s volunteer assistant coach for the 2022 and ’23 seasons. In his first season with the program, USC went 22-7 overall with an 8-4 record in MPSF matches and advanced to the MPSF tournament semifinal.
Martinez has several years of coaching experience at the high school and club levels. He also serves as the 17s White head coach at the Balboa Bay Volleyball Club, one of the premier boys’ volleyball clubs in the country. In 2021, he helped coach the Balboa Bay 15s to gold medals at the Junior Olympics. That year, his club also finished first for the SoCal Cup. In the summer of 2023, he helped coach Balboa Bay to silver medals at the SoCal Cup Showcase.
From 2017 to 2020, Martinez served as the varsity boys assistant coach at Servite High School in Anaheim, Calif. Martinez graduated from St. John Bosco High School in Bellflower, Calif., and was a head coach for the Braves’ freshmen and JV boys’ teams at his alma mater from 2008-15. Martinez holds a Bachelor of Science in kinesiology from Cal State Bakersfield (2015) and received his Doctorate in Physical Therapy from Chapman University in 2019.
