Undefeated Season Comes to an End at No. 3 Stanford

STANFORD, Calif. – A historic start to the 2023 season came to an end for No. 25 Sun Devil Volleyball as the team fell in straight sets (25-19, 25-18, 25-12) at No. 3 Stanford on Friday night at Maples Pavilion.

Notable Stats

  • Arizona State (14-1, 2-1 Pac-12) had its first loss of the season, dropping the match at No. 3 Stanford (10-2, 3-0 Pac-12).
  • The win streak ended at 14 in a row, the third-best start in program history. It was also the best start by a new head coach in ASU history in the NCAA era. 
  • The Sun Devils struggled on offense, hitting .125 to the Cardinal’s .339. 
  • Junior outside hitter Geli Cyr led the team in kills with nine. She also had seven digs.
  • Graduate libero Mary Shroll had a team-high 11 digs in the match. She also had ASU’s only ace. 
  • As a team, Arizona State had five blocks. Senior Claire Jeter and graduate Shannon Shields had two blocks each. 

Set One: Stanford 25, ASU 19
Stanford took the early lead to start the match, putting together a couple of points at a time to build a lead. The Cardinal built a seven-point lead after a 7-2 run before  timeout, making it 15-8. Levinska’s kill ended the run and Cyr followed it up with two-straight kills to make it a 15-11 deficit. The teams traded points until the Cardinal scored two in a row, extending their lead to 22-17 and forcing a timeout from the Sun Devils. A kill from Cyr held off set point, but a kill from Stanford won the set, 25-19.
