Cortland Drops Decision to Visiting Eastern University

CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Cortland women’s volleyball team had its seven-match winning streak snapped as the Red Dragons lost to visiting Eastern University of Pennsylvania, 25-20, 25-21, 25-22, in a non-conference matchup. 
 
Cortland fell to 12-3 with the loss. Eastern, an NCAA tournament team each of the past two seasons, improved to 14-3. 
 
Kira Pirrera (Hauppauge/Smithtown West) led Cortland with 11 kills, followed by Allie Sturgess (Stony Brook/Ward Melville) with eight kills. Sturgess, who was recognized on Senior Day prior to the match, also recorded two aces and seven digs. 
 
Lexy Bloss (York, PA/Dallastown Area) turned in a seven-kill, four-block performance. Anna Pilkey (Ballston Spa) and Alexa Guedez (Mamaroneck/Rye Neck) totaled five kills apiece. Guedez finished with four blocks, two solo, and Pilkey had three blocks. Mikenzie Martens (Carthage) led the Red Dragons with 21 digs, Meadow Wittman (Colden/Springville Griffith Institute) ended with 18 assists and two aces, and Ryan Hinshaw (Aurora, IL/Joliet Catholic Academy) added 14 assists. 
 
Hannah Pringle and Logan Martin led the visiting Eagles with 11 and nine kills, respectively. Elle Jiron-Bujanda had 32 assists, seven digs and five kills and Bridgette Killey registered seven kills and four aces. 
 
Eastern never trailed in the first set, although Cortland was within 19-17 before a late surge by the guests. Eastern was clinging to a 19-18 lead in the second before wrapping up the set on a 6-2 run, and Cortland closed a 23-18 deficit to 23-22 before the Eagles scored the final two points. 
 
Cortland will travel to Potsdam next…
