Soaring Eagles Come Up Short in Fifth Set to Russell Sage on Friday Evening

ELMIRA, N.Y. – The Elmira College women’s volleyball program battled the visiting Gators from Russell Sage College to five sets on Friday evening, but would eventually fall in the decider as the Gators captured its first Empire 8 victory of the season. 

The match, which featured 31 ties and 16 lead changes, would be pushed to a fifth set after Elmira took the fourth frame 25-23. After a 7-7 tie in the fifth, the Gators would rally off five consecutive points, which would be enough in its 15-12 fifth set victory. 

The Soaring Eagles would be led by Maddie Boucher ’24 on the offensive side, who finished with 15 kills, while Morgan Richardson ’25 notched ten kills. Asia Curkendall ’25 would record 40 assists in the loss.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Gators would take the opening set despite the Soaring Eagles leading the kill battle, 11-10. In the frame, Elmira would gain its first lead at 13-12 as part of a 5-0 run with Makenna Clark ’24 at the service position. The Gators would then take eight of ten points nearing the end of the set, but it would be Russell Sage who would take three of the final four to take the 25-22 first set victory. 
  • In the second, Elmira would storm back to tie the match after a 25-23 victory. In the frame, Boucher would go for four kills, while Curkendall would notch ten set assists. 
  • With the match tied, Sage would take the 2-1 advantage…
