Union Closes Conference Slate at Vassar

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Union College women’s volleyball team closed out its 2023 Liberty League schedule with a hard-fought 3-2 (25-19, 22-25, 25-27, 25-12, 15-11) defeat at the hands of Vassar College on Wednesday night at Kenyon Hall.
 
Senior Nikki Newcomer paced Union (12-12, 2-6 Liberty League) with 11 kills, followed by sophomore Shannon McGrath with eight kills and 17 digs. Sophomore Georgia Pool recorded a team-leading 25 digs and first-year Sydney Scanlon registered 32 assists.
 
The Garnet Chargers struggled in the first set of the night, recording only five kills as the Brewers jumped out to a 1-0 lead. But Union responded with a match-best 13 kills in the second stanza to even the match. With the score tied at 10, the visitors used a 5-0 run to take the lead and soon after rattled off six straight points to take control and hold on to even the match.
 
The visitors jumped out to a 6-0 lead to begin the third set and led by a 17-12 margin before Vassar came back to tie the score at 17. The score was tied at 24 before a Newcomer kill gave Union its first set point and, after Vassar tied the score again at 25, Newcomer added another kill and Vassar committed an error to give the Garnet Chargers a 2-1 lead.
 
The Brewers used an 11-2 run to open up a big lead on the way to taking the fourth set, setting up a decisive fifth frame. The last set was the closest of the night, featuring nine ties. But with the frame tied at 11, Vassar scored four straight points to close out the set and the match.
