PITTSBURGH –The No. 7 University of Pittsburgh volleyball team (20-3, 11-1 ACC) swept Wake Forest (16-7, 7-5 ACC) in the Fitzgerald Field House on senior day. Rachel Fairbanks led the way with 33 assists, 11 digs, two kills, two blocks and an ace.
Pitt and Wake Forest went back and forth in the beginning of the first set until a 3-1 run from the Demon Deacons forced the Panthers to take a timeout, up 7-6. A 7-4 run behind two kills apiece from Torrey Stafford and Emma Monks gave Pitt momentum and caused a Wake Forest timeout, with Pitt up 14-10. After going up 18-13, the Panthers record a trio of errors, and Pitt took their first timeout. After earning three of the next four points, the Panthers forced the Demon Deacons to take their final timeout, down 17-21. A kill from four different Panthers in the following stretch secured the 25-19 first set win.
The Panthers started off the second set strong, going up 7-3 early. The Pitt offense continued to click, helping extend their lead once again to 14-8. A successful Pitt challenge and an ace from Valeria Vazquez Gomez allowed for a 16-8 Panther lead. Four Panther kills led to Wake Forest taking their final timeout, up 20-12, and Fairbanks secured the second set, 25-15 on an ace.
Once again, Pitt started hot, forcing an early Wake Forest timeout, up 4-1. The Demon Deacons came within three, only down 13-16, but an efficient side out percentage and a final service run from Vazquez Gomez allowed for the 25-18 set three win and 3-0…
