Hokies fall to North Carolina in 3-set sweep Friday


CHAPEL HILL, NC —The Virginia Tech volleyball team lost to the North Carolina Tar Heels in straight sets (22-25, 14-25, 18-25) Friday on the road at Carmichael Arena.

The loss dropped Virginia Tech’s record to 12-12 overall and 2-11 in ACC action.

The Hokies attack was paced by Hailey Pearce, who finished with 11 kills on the day with a hitting percentage of .333, and by Elayna Duprey, who had 10 while hitting .381. The Hokies got seven digs from Iliana Rodriguez to lead them defensively.

» Hanna Borer had a team-high two aces in the loss.

How It Happened

SET 1 | The Hokies found themselves in an early hole, losing the first set 25-22. North Carolina grabbed the advantage for good at 23-22 in a set that was tied up five times before the Tar Heels took over in the second half of the period.

SET 2 | A 25-14 set-two loss put Virginia Tech in a 2-0 deficit in the match. Virginia Tech trailed by as many as 11 points as North Carolina grabbed the advantage for good at 7-6 in a set that was tied up three times prior to the Tar Heels taking control of the lead.

SET 3 | Virginia Tech couldn’t prolong the match and lost in set number three. The Hokies lost a tough set 25-18. Virginia Tech trailed by as many as seven points as North Carolina grabbed the advantage for good at 18-17 in a set that was knotted up five times before the Tar Heels took over in the second half of the stanza.
