Wildcats Fall in Three Sets to Trojans

LOS ANGELES – Arizona lost in straight sets to USC (16-25, 18-25, 20-25) on Friday night.
 
Sofia Maldonado Diaz led Arizona’s offense with 12 kills while Jaelyn Hodge and Jordan Wilson had five kills each.
 
Arizona’s defense totaled 10.0 blocks, led by Alayna Johnson with five blocks. Wilson had four blocks – one solo and three assists.  
 
USC won the first set, 25-16. Maldonado Diaz led the Wildcats with five kills and a .400 hitting percentage, but Arizona only hit .103 in the opening set. The Wildcats totaled 3.0 blocks – led by Wilson with one solo block and two block assists. USC took the lead at 9-8 and went on a 5-0 run to help secure the set victory for the Trojans.

Arizona fell behind 2-0 after losing the second set, 18-25. Despite the Wildcats recording 5.0 blocks to hold the Trojans to a .194 hitting percentage, USC took advantage of three service aces to win the second set. Maldonado Diaz led Arizona again with four kills and Nicole Briggs followed with three kills. Johnson recorded three blocks and Ana Heath had two blocks.

 

The Wildcats lost Set 3, 25-20. Arizona jumped to a five-point lead in the middle of the set but couldn’t hold on as USC used well-timed runs to take the lead. Maldonado Diaz had three kills while Hodge, Johnson, and Wilson each tallied two kills. Heath served two aces and Maldonado Diaz tallied two blocks in the final set.
