China and Canada advanced to the gold medal match of the 2023 World ParaVolley Sitting Volleyball World Cup, following their straight-set semifinal victories on Friday in Cairo, Egypt. China and Canada are undefeated with six wins apiece.
Asian champions China stunned world champions Brazil in a tough battle to reach the final with a 3-0 (25-23, 25-21, 25-23) scoreline.
World Championship runners-up Canada made it to the World Cup final with a 3-0 (25-13, 25-17, 25-23) triumph against European powerhouse Germany.
Brazil will face Germany in the bronze medal match on Saturday, November 18, at 14:00 local time, followed by the gold medal match between China and Canada at 16:00.
In other women’s matches, Ukraine and Slovenia will play for fifth place on Saturday at 12:00 after recording respective victories against Rwanda 3-1 (18-25, 25-9, 25-19, 25-23) and Egypt 3-0 (25-12, 25-12, 25-15). Rwanda and Egypt will play for seventh place at 10:00.
The Netherlands ended their World Cup campaign with a 3-0 (25-17, 25-15, 25-9) win over Mongolia to finish in ninth place.
Meanwhile, in the men’s tournament, France collected two victories in the men’s classification clashes. The Frenchmen triumphed over Algeria 3-1 (25-23, 22-25, 25-20, 25-17) and Great Britain 3-1 (25-14, 19-25, 25-21, 25-21).
Algeria bounced back later in the afternoon with a 3-0 (25-15, 25-8, 25-11) win over India, which also lost to Rwanda 3-0 (25-8, 25-14, 25-19) in their morning matchup.
On Saturday, Japan and Iraq will battle for seventh place at 10:00, followed by the match for fifth place against Brazil and China at 11:30.
The bronze medal match between Germany and Ukraine will start at 13:30, and the gold medal match between hosts Egypt and world champions Iran will be at 18:00.
The World Cup is a Paris 2024 Paralympic qualifier, where one berth per gender is available for the winner or the highest placed non-qualified team of the tournament.
Ten teams have qualified so far for the Paris 2024 Paralympics, including France (M and W) as hosts, world champions Iran (M) and Brazil (W), Asian champions Kazakhstan (M) and China (W), European champions Bosnia and Herzegovina (M) and Italy (W), and Pan American champions Brazil (M) and United States (W).
