SYRACUSE, N.Y. –The No. 3 University of Pittsburgh volleyball team (25-4, 16-2 ACC) secured at least a share of the ACC Championship Friday night after sweeping Syracuse (2-26, 0-18 ACC). This is the second consecutive season the Panthers have won the title and the fifth in program history.
The Panthers put pressure on Syracuse from the first point, getting out to an early 10-2 lead thanks to four consecutive aces from Olivia Babcock, forcing the Orange to take a timeout. Fellow freshman Torrey Stafford went on a service run of her own, giving Pitt a 16-4 lead. The Pitt serve continued to be the difference maker for the rest of the way in the first set, as Valeria Vazquez Gomez’s service pressure secured the first set win, 25-8. The Panthers hit .611 in the set as Lexis Akeo recorded 10 assists.
Syracuse recorded a few points early in the second set as Pitt went up 6-4, but the Panthers went into the media timeout up 15-9. Freshman Haiti Tautua’a came into the match and immediately made an impact, recording a handful of assists and went on a 4-0 run to force a Syracuse timeout. Up 19-9, the Panthers clinched the second set win, 25-12 behind four Vazquez Gomez kills and a pair of Syracuse errors.
The Panthers continued to dominate in set three, pushing the Orange to take a timeout as Pitt held an early 11-5 lead. Dillyn Griffin continued to impress behind the service line and propelled Pitt to a 16-7 lead, and a 9-6 run behind a pair of kills from Olivia Babcock and a final 3-0 run from Logan Mosley helped Pitt win the third set, 25-13 and 3-0 sweep for the ACC Championship trophy.
