LEXINGTON, Ky. – Recognition for Sun Devil Beach Volleyball continues with another first-time award as sophomore Arden Besecker and freshman Ava Williamson were recognized as the AVCA Top Flight for Flight Two.
Top Flight awards recognize excellence in collegiate beach volleyball from all over the country and across all flights. Eligible pairs must compete in at least 15 matches together at a specific flight number and win at least 75% of their matches—regardless of the overall result of the dual. There are 53 total pairs in the nation that earned this award this season. For the complete list of winners, head to the AVCA’s website.
Besecker and Williamson went 15-3 together this season with eight wins over ranked opponents, including two over top-five teams Stanford and TCU. This is the first AVCA Top Flight nod for a Sand Devil pair in program history. This award comes off the heels of Arizona State earning two second team All-America nods yesterday, one for Williamson and one for sophomore Daniella Kensinger. They are the first All-Americans in program history.
Williamson currently leads the team in wins with a 24-6 record between the one and two pairs. Besecker is also no stranger to winning, as she has the second best record on the team at 22-6, all on court two. They are both high in the ASU record book for single season win totals, with Williamson in third and Besecker tied for sixth.
Earlier this season, Williamson and Besecker dominated as the No. 2 duo and earned a spot in the record book as they won nine straight games together, which is tied for the longest winning streak for a pair. Besecker extended her winning streak to 12 and Williamson got hers to 11, which are the top two longest winning streaks by individuals in ASU history.
Arizona State is set to compete in the NCAA Championships this Friday against Cal Poly at 8 a.m. MST/10 a.m. CDT on ESPNU.
