CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia volleyball program released its 2024 schedule on Wednesday (June 12), which is highlighted by 15 home matches and contests against new ACC members California, SMU and Stanford.
Under the direction of fourth-year head coach Shannon Wells, Virginia opens its 46th season on the road at Old Dominion’s “Quest for the Crown” tournament that includes Marist (Aug. 30), William & Mary (Aug. 31) and ODU (Aug. 31). UVA returns home for the Cavalier Classic, which features Coastal Carolina (Sept. 6-7) and Hofstra (Sept. 7).
The following weekend, Virginia travels to Liberty for the Flames’ home tournament that includes East Tennessee State (Sept. 12), West Virginia (Sept. 13) and Liberty (Sept. 13).
Back-to-back home matches with Middle Tennessee State on Sept. 17 and 18 wrap up UVA’s non-conference slate.
Virginia opens ACC play with a trip to Tobacco Road to meet Wake Forest on Sept. 27 and NC State on Sept. 29.
UVA will face all three new ACC members in 2024. Virginia will host SMU on Nov. 3 and travel to the west coast for road matches at Stanford (Nov. 14) and Cal (Nov. 15). It will be the first meeting between the Hoos and Mustangs. Stanford and UVA met during the 2001 season with the Cardinals prevailing 3-0. UVA and Cal faced off in 2011 with the Golden Bears taking a 3-0 decision. Both of those matches took place at Virginia.
The Commonwealth Clash presented by Smithfield matches between UVA and Virginia Tech will take place over a three-day period. The teams meet on Nov. 6 (Wednesday) in Charlottesville and Nov. 8 (Friday) in Blacksburg.
The Cavaliers’ ACC home slate also includes matches versus Florida State (Oct. 4), Miami (Oct. 6), Duke (Oct. 18), North Carolina (Oct. 20), Pitt (Nov. 1), SMU (Nov. 3), Louisville (Nov. 22), Notre Dame (Nov. 24) and Boston College (Nov. 30).
Virginia’s other ACC road contests include Clemson (Oct. 11), Georgia Tech (Oct. 13), Syracuse (Oct. 25), Boston College (Oct. 27) and North Carolina (Nov. 27).
“It’s a very exciting time for UVA Volleyball and the ACC,” Wells said. “Our ACC schedule will be one of the most challenging in the country. Seven of our 10 home ACC matches are against teams with NCAA Tournament experience, including Louisville and Pitt, which have been to the Final Four in the last three years.
