Manama, Bahrain, July 28, 2024 – Thailand recovered from a sluggish start to post a 3-1 (21-25, 25-18, 25-13, 25-21) comeback victory against Australia on Sunday in Pool A of the 15th Asian Men’s U18 Volleyball Championship at Isa Sport City Hall C here.
The Australians were the aggressors at the start and took the early match advantage with back-to-back winners by opposite Sionetupou Veamatahau, which included a set-clinching service ace.
But the Thais roared back in the second frame and rode their momentum into a one-sided third to take full control of the game.
Australia valiantly battled to stay in the fight in the fourth set and outside hitter Dan Moisescu helped them draw level at 21-all. But the Thais responded with a decisive rally of four unanswered points, sealing the result.
Outside hitter Jirayu Simtama put in sensational performance to score a match-high 21 points for Thailand, while fellow outside hitter Sorasak Phunsanong added 12 and middle blocker Kiarttisak Seta finished with 11 in the win.
Opposite Veamatahau and outside hitter Cody Meisenhofen finished with 11 points apiece, while Moisescu added nine for Australia.
Following the game, Jirayu expressed his delight with the team’s victory and highlighted the importance of getting the tournament off on a winning note.
