Cortland Dominates Mary Washington in Johns Hopkins Invite Opener

BALTIMORE, MD. – The Cortland women’s volleyball team earned its 10th win of the season as the Red Dragons swept Mary Washington, 25-8, 25-15, 25-20, during Day 1 of the Johns Hopkins Invitational.
 
Cortland (10-3) will play twice on Saturday, facing Eastern University at 10 a.m. and nationally fifth-ranked Johns Hopkins at 12:30 p.m.
 
Anna Pilkey (Ballston Spa) led Cortland with nine kills and a .353 attack percentage and added 11 digs. Jennifer Koestner (Syosset) finished with nine kills, a .250 attack percentage, seven digs and a team-high four aces and Kira Pirrera (Hauppauge/Smithtown West) had seven kills and a .294 attack percentage.
 
Emalee Ballou (Eden) totaled five kills and three digs and shared the team lead with three blocks. Alexa Guedez (Mamaroneck/Rye Neck) also had five kills and three blocks, Ryan Hinshaw (Aurora, IL/Joliet Catholic Academy) handed out 15 assists, Samantha Rodriguez (Camarillo, CA/Adolfo Camarillo) ended with 10 assists and two aces, and Mikenzie Martens (Carthage) led the Red Dragons with 15 digs.
 
Mary Washington (7-7) was led by Libby Potter with five kills and Hannah Livermon with nine digs. The Eagles finished 30-5 and advanced to the NCAA Division III tournament third round last season.
 
Cortland raced out to a 12-1 lead in the first set on the way to an easy win. The Red Dragons led 15-14 in the second before finishing on a 10-1 run. The third set featured six lead changes and seven ties, the last at 15-15. Cortland scored the next five points, including two Pirrera kills, to go up 20-15, and the Red Dragons led by at least four the rest of the way.
