SEATTLE — Off to its best start since the 2015 season, the Husky volleyball team heads out on its first Big Ten road trip this weekend, and will face its first top-25 challenge of the year. Washington, back in the rankings this week for the first time since 2022, ranked No. 25, will visit Iowa this Friday, Oct. 4. Then UW will pop on over to Madison, Wisconsin to take on the 9th-ranked Badgers on Sunday, Oct. 6, at the UW Field House.
Friday’s battle with the Hawkeyes will be televised live nationally on Big Ten Network, starting at 6 p.m. Pacific time. Sunday’s UW vs. UW showdown will be streamed on Big Ten Plus with an 11 a.m. PT first serve.
The Huskies are 12-0 and started 2-0 in conference, winning its first two Big Ten matches last weekend at home over Indiana and Illinois. Washington’s defense continued to take its opponents out of rhythm, as the Huskies held the two teams to a combined .093 attacking. The Huskies now rank fourth in the NCAA and lead the Big Ten with an opponent attack percentage of .126.
Washington and Iowa are two of six Big Ten teams that went 2-0 on the opening weekend of conference play. The Hawkeyes had back-to-back five set wins over Maryland and Rutgers. This is Iowa’s first 2-0 Big Ten start since 2008. Outside hitter Malu Garcia was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week this week, after notching 17 kills in the 3-2 win over Rutgers with 9 blocks, and 11 kills and 5 blocks in the win over Maryland. Iowa is now 8-6 on the season. They are hitting .224 as a team and allowing a .211 opponent attack. Garcia is averaging 2.76 kills per set, and Hannah Whittingstall is averaging 2.08 kills per set, hitting .269, and blocking 1.25 per set. Libero Joy Galles is averaging 3.88 digs per set. UW last visited Iowa in 2019 and had a 3-1 win.
Wisconsin was second in the Big Ten last year and reached the Final Four, falling to Texas in the 2023 semifinals. The Badgers have played one of the toughest schedules this year, and are 7-4, and went 1-1 in the opening week of conference, falling in five sets at Minnesota and…
