Turkmenistan’s Yazmyrat Merdanov attacks Kyrgyzstan
Colombo, Sri Lanka, October 7, 2024 – Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan made it two in succession, as hosts Sri Lanka sailed past Maldives in comfortable straight sets to register their first victory on Day 2 of the CAVA Men’s U20 Volleyball Championship at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium in Colombo on Monday.
Uzbekistan jubilant with the point win against Nepal
The day’s most anticipated match saw Uzbekistan, fresh from convincing 3-0 victory against Kyrgyzstan, survive a strong challenge from Nepal to beat the spirited opponents 3-1 (25-19, 25-14, 27-29, 25-15).
Despite a determined fight from Nepal in the third set, Uzbekistan counter-attacked well at the final stretch to claim the hard-fought set and maintained that great form to secure their second consecutive win.
Ogabek Haydarov delivered a match-high 22 points from 15 attacks, two blocks and team-leading 5 aces for Uzbekistan. Shokhboz Mamayusufov and Saidjamol Murobidinov kept good company to contribute 17 and 13 points respectively. Pahal Gahatraj was the Nepal’s most productive player with 13 points, all in attack, on the team’s loss.
Uzbekistan dominated all elements of skills consisting of kills (53 to 43), blocks (12 to 4), aces (8 to 20) while also benefiting from more opponent errors (29 to 28).
Earlier, Turkmenistan, which opened up their campaign with a straight-set win against Maldives on the first day, stayed in their top form as they pulled off a scintillating 3-0 (25-22, 25-18, 25-19) victory over Kyrgyzstan.
Meylis Jumageldiyev led Turkmenistan with 12 points, all in attack, while Baitur Mendibaev contributed 7 points including 6 attacks from 12 attempts on the Kyrgyzstan’s loss.
The last match of the day saw hosts Sri Lanka, which succumbed to straight-set loss to Nepal on the first day, thrill a packed home crowd with a lopsided 3-0 (25-14, 25-14, 25-11) win over the Maldives for their first victory in the one-week tournament.
Nemashana led Sri Lanka with 14 points from 9 attacks and 5 aces. The host side also limited the opponents’ offense to the point that no Maldivian player got to reach double digits in scoring against them. Yaeesh Rifath Hameed bagged 6 points, all in attack, on the Maldives’ loss.
After the first two days, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan finished top two at the 6-team standing with similar 6 points from two straight wins, with the former not losing a single set to their rivals to stay…
