HOSTS UZBEKISTAN, KYRGYZSTAN AND TURKMENISTAN SEAL STRAIGHT-SET VICTORIES ON DAY 1 OF CAVA MEN’S CHAMPIONSHIP

Tashkent, Uzbekistan, October 18, 2024 – The CAVA Men’s Volleyball Championship officially began in Tashkent with a vibrant opening ceremony, setting the stage for an exciting week of competition.

The opening ceremony, which commenced at 6:00pm local time, took place just before the day’s final match between Afghanistan and Turkmenistan. The event was graced by several distinguished guests, emphasizing the importance of this tournament to the region.

The ceremony was attended by Bekmurod Tajimirzaevich Abdullaev, First Deputy Chairman of the Uzbekistan Volleyball Federation; Shahxrillo Sharipovich Maxmudov, Deputy Minister of Uzbekistan Sports Ministry and Sarvar Dekhkanovic Mamayusupov, Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the National Guard of the Republic of Uzbekistan.

Also in attendance were Sherzod Olimov, Head of the Mass Sports Development Department of the Sports Ministry of Uzbekistan; and Begzod Ubaildullaev, Head of the Sports Department of Tashkent City. Their presence demonstrated Uzbekistan’s commitment to fostering the growth of volleyball in the region.

Following the ceremony, the matches continued with fierce competition from all six participating teams.

Uzbekistan, current world No.79, got off to a brilliant start in the one-week championship as the host side displayed strong teamwork and precision to sweep Tajikistan in a comfortable one-sided affair 25-14, 25-13, 25-12 on Friday. 

Uzbekistan will next take on world No.63 Afghanistan on Saturday, the second day of the competition. 

Afghanistan fought hard in their first match against Turkmenistan on Friday, but found the rivals too hot to handle.

Going down in the first two sets with ease 17-25, 16-25, the Afghans regained their composure and bounced back strongly in the third set. 

However, they came up a bit short in the deciding moments and Turkmenistan seized the opportunity to storm on their aggressive attacks and blocks to win the hard-fought set 25-23 and match. Turkmenistan will next play Maldives on Saturday.

The first encounter between Kyrgyzstan and Maldives earlier saw the former take the first set without much trouble 25-15, maintain their outstanding performance to clinch the lopsided second set 25-13 and kept the upper hand through the rest of the match, winning the comfortable third set 25-16 and match.

Kyrgyzstan will next go up against Tajikistan.
