Three Lady Vols Posted Double-Doubles in Loss to Georgia


KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – A trio of Lady Vols recorded double-doubles, but it wasn’t enough as Tennessee fell in five sets (21-25, 25-20, 24-26, 25-23, 15-13) to Georgia on Friday night at Food City Center.
 
The Big Orange (13-10, 6-7 SEC) finished with 62 kills on .182 hitting, 58 assists and six aces on offense to go along with a season-best 79 digs and seven blocks defensively. Five Lady Vols finished with double-digit digs in the contest, while three players eclipsed double-figure kills.
 
Junior outside hitter Hayden Kubik recorded her seventh double-double of the season, tallying a team-high 18 digs, 13 kills, four assists and two blocks. Graduate student outside hitter Nina Cajic added 17 kills, 13 digs and two aces, while redshirt sophomore setter Caroline Kerr posted 51 assists and 15 digs. It was Kerr’s sixth double-double of the year and the eight 50-assist effort of her career.
 
Freshman right side Paityn Chapman matched Cajic for the team lead in kills, notching 17 to go with three digs and a pair of blocks. Sophomores Mackenzie Plante and Katie Barrier finished with 11 and 10 digs, respectively. Barrier also added a pair of aces.
 
Georgia (10-12, 4-8 SEC) finished the night with 66 kills on .240 hitting, 77 digs, 64 assists, 13 blocks and four aces. Throughout the match, there were 17 lead changes and 40 ties.
 
The first set was a back-and-forth affair with three lead changes and eight ties, but the Lady Vols rallied behind a 6-2 run to end the set on top. Chapman led the offense with seven kills on .545 hitting, while the defense used 20 digs to hold the Bulldogs to .119 hitting as a team.
 
Georgia answered in the second stanza by outhitting UT and forcing the Lady Vols into eight attacking errors. The Bulldogs had all the momentum in the third period, jumping out to a 19-15 lead. However, Tennessee flipped a switch and finished the set on an impressive 11-5 run to pull back ahead in the contest. The Big Orange had 15 kills and two aces in the frame, with Kubik leading the way six kills.
 
The fourth frame featured three lead changes and 13 ties, but Georgia came out on top to even the match. The Bulldogs had 18 kills on .389 hitting while holding UT to just .161 hitting. The Lady Vols came up short in the fifth frame.
 
Up next, UT is back at home for the penultimate weekend of the regular season, taking on Arkansas (Nov. 22) and South Carolina (Nov. 24). The contest against the Gamecocks will be a rematch…
