Academic Services October Student-Athletes of the Month

PULLMAN, Wash. — Washington State student athletes Katy Ryan (volleyball) and Marin Whieldon (soccer) were named Academic Services Student-Athletes of the Month for October, 2023.

Ryan, a junior from Rathdrum, Idaho, owns a 3.65 cumulative grade point average as an Elementary Education major with a minor in Human Development.  In addition to pursuing a degree that requires a significant time commitment, Ryan has put up one of her best seasons on the court with 2.39 kills/set and 60 total blocks on the season as the Cougars’ starting opposite hitter.  A Pac-12 All-Freshman selection following her rookie season in 2021, Ryan earned honorable mention All-Pac-12 honors as a sophomore while also earning CSC Academic All-District distinction in 2022.

Whieldon, a senior from Upland, Calif., holds a 3.76 cumulative GPA as a major in Human Development with a minor in psychology. On the field, Whieldon has played in 15 matches this season, starting four of them. The attacking midfield eclipsed 60 career matches played this fall, and she scored a memorable debut goal as a sophomore – the game-winner in the opening round of the 2021 NCAA Tournament over Montana. Whieldon was a 2022 CSC Academic All-District selection for her performance in the classroom last fall.

Each month Washington State Academic Services honors two student-athletes that demonstrates commitment to academics while participating in their sport.
