HOUSTON, Texas – Alabama volleyball fell in a pair of contests Friday at the Flo Hyman Collegiate Cup, dropping a close five-set battle against Oregon State before a three-set loss to tournament host Houston.
Alabama (3-2) dropped the first two sets of its opening matchup against Oregon State (1-2) before avoiding the sweep with a five-point win in the third and forcing a deciding fifth set with a 25-18 win in the fourth. The comeback attempt fell just short in the fifth set as the Beavers hung on to win, 15-7, and take the match. In the second match of the day against tournament host Houston (4-1), the Tide couldn’t get into a rhythm as the Cougars pounced to a five-point win in the opening frame before winning the next two by 10 and nine points, respectively, to complete the sweep.
Abby Marjama and Kendyl Reaugh tied for the team lead with 25 kills each on the day, with Micah Gryniewicz close behind with 22. Gryniewicz tallied a season-high 16 in the five-set effort against Oregon State, along with 11 digs for her first career double-double. Emily Janek made her season debut at setter, tallying 65 combined assists on the day along with double-doubles in both matches, bringing her career total to 15.
