TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Alabama volleyball fell to South Carolina in three sets Friday night in Foster Auditorium by set scores of 28-30, 21-25 and 19-25.
Alabama (8-17, 2-11 SEC) surged ahead early in the opening set, posting an 11-3 advantage as South Carolina (12-12, 6-8 SEC) spent both its timeouts in the process. The Gamecocks started to close the gap in the middle of the frame, as a 5-1 run drew the visitors within five at 18-13 and the Tide called its first timeout. The lead continued to decrease, down to 20-18 at Alabama’s second timeout, and South Carolina soon took its first lead at 22-21. The teams would combine for six set points before the Gamecocks ended it at 30-28.
Alabama had the lead again early in set two until, leading 13-11, South Carolina scored four unanswered to swing it in their favor 15-13 at the media timeout. The Tide fought back to tie the score twice down the stretch but the Gamecocks ultimately held on to win, 25-21, and take a 2-0 match lead. With Alabama up 10-8 in the third, a 7-1 run put South Carolina up 15-11 at the media timeout and they would remain in front the rest of the way, winning 25-19 to complete the sweep.
Sami Jacobs tied for the team lead with 10 kills, her fifth match this season in double figures including three of the last five. Abby Marjama earned a service ace, putting her seven away from cracking the UA single-season and career top 10 lists. Emily Janek earned her 10th double-double of the season and seventh in SEC play with 36 assists and 13 digs.
