Senior women’s volleyball middle blocker Alexa Guedez (Mamaroneck/Rye Neck), sophomore women’s cross country runner Melissa Innocent (Elmont/Valley Stream North) and sophomore football running back Ethan Gallo (Slate Hill/Minisink Valley) have been named the SUNY Cortland Athletes of the Week for the week ending Nov. 17.
Alexa was named the MVP of the SUNYAC Women’s Volleyball Tournament after helping Cortland claim its fourth straight league title. She finished with eight blocks and four kills in a semifinal win over New Paltz and had seven kills, a .400 attack percentage and two blocks in a win over Buffalo State in the finals.
Melissa earned All-Niagara Region honors with a 15th-place finish out of 156 runners at the regional championship race. She covered the 6,000-meter course in 22 minutes, 53.8 seconds. Innocent earned an individual berth into the NCAA Division III Championships as the fifth of seven runners qualifying from schools that didn’t advance as teams.
Ethan ran 32 times for 183 yards and a TD and caught two passes for 10 yards in Cortland’s 28-17 win over visiting Ithaca in the annual Cortaca Jug game as the Red Dragons completed a 10-0 regular season. His 3-yard TD run in the second quarter tied the game at 14-14.
