TUCSON, Ariz. – The Wildcats swept California, 25-13, 25-23, 25-22, on Sunday afternoon. Arizona recorded 15 blocks – led by Zyonna Fellows’ career high 12 blocks – to hold the Golden Bears to a .077 hitting percentage.
Jaelyn Hodge led Arizona’s offense with 15 kills and Kamaile Hiapo recorded 22 digs for the Cats. Fellows’ 12 blocks are the most blocks by a Wildcat in a three-set match since Dominique Lamb tallied 12 blocks against Oregon State in 2007.
Arizona won the first set, 25-13. The Wildcats tallied six blocks and hit .375 to power through the first set. Cal scored the first point of the match, but Arizona answered with a 6-0 run to take an early lead that the Golden Bears couldn’t catch. Sofia Maldonado Diaz had four kills and hit .500 while Fellows held the defense down with four blocks.
The Wildcats took a two-set lead over California with a 25-23 win in Set 2. Hodge found her rhythm in the second set with eight kills and a .462 clip. Puk Stubbe followed with six kills and a .545 hitting percentage in the set. Fellows recorded four blocks – one solo and three assisted – to help Arizona win the set.
Arizona secured the match win with a 25-22 victory in Set 3. Hodge led Arizona’s attack with five kills and Fellows tallied one block solo and three block assists to hold off Cal’s offense.
