Bears Place Three On All-Pac-12 Team

Costa Earns First Team Honors; Mirkovic, Gessner Named To Second Team

SAN FRANCISCO – The Cal beach volleyball team placed three student-athletes on the All-Pac-12 team that was announced Tuesday, with fifth-year senior Mima Mirkovic earning her fourth career honor with a spot on the second team.

Graduate transfer Ana Costa was placed on the first team while sophomore Maya Gessner joined Mirkovic on the second team.

Mirkovic, who was selected to the first team in 2018, 2019 and 2021, went 11-5 this season and 11-3 in matches she finished. She recorded four victories against ranked opponents while playing exclusively at the No. 1 position. Mirkovic is also a three-time All-American and holds Cal’s record for most wins at the No. 1 position with 73. The Irvine, Calif., native ranks second in Cal history with 79 career wins overall.

Costa joined the Bears this year as a graduate transfer and promptly went 26-12, with the 26 wins ranking fifth in school history for most in a season. The Sergipe, Brazil native also set the program record for most wins at the No. 1 position with 20. Costa recorded nine wins over ranked opponents while playing with Mirkovic and Gessner and was named an AVCA Second Team All-American for the second time in her career.

Gessner, a sophomore from La Jolla, Calif., earned her first All-Pac-12 honor as she went 26-13 in 2022 while playing at all five spots in the lineup. She tied Costa for fifth-most wins in a season and notched eight victories over ranked opponents.

The Bears went 26-14 this season and advanced to the NCAA Championship for the first time in program history. Cal was ranked No. 11 in the final AVCA poll of the year.
