Bison go 1-1 on first day of Worthington Classic, Boren wins 600th career win between time at GU and MSSD


WASHINGTON – The 15th annual Worthington Classic got underway here Friday in the Field House as Gallaudet University played host to seven visiting teams. The host Bison split its two matches it played on the opening day of the two-day tournament.

Gallaudet (7-8) dropped its opening match in straight sets to Washington (Md.) College as the Shorewomen won the tightly played contest; 26-24, 25-22, 26-24. Junior opposite Emily Wright (Penn Valley, Calif.) led the Bison with 14 kills on 26 swings with only five errors for a .346 attack percentage. Junior setter Emma Giuntoli (Austin, Texas) passed out 13 assists and served up five aces in the loss. Sophomore Anya Pothorski (Indianapolis, Ind.) was strong upfront with one block solo and three block assists. 

In the nightcap, Gallaudet responded with its own straight set victory over Elmira College, 25-22, 25-16, 25-10. Wright posted similar numbers as she recorded 13 kills on 23 swings with five errors for a .348 attack percentage. Giuntoli passed out 30 helpers while junior Leila Sicoli (Austin, Texas) made 13 digs. Pothorski tallied two block solos and three block assists as GU had eight team blocks in the win. The Bison served up 12 aces as five different servers had two or more. 

Gallaudet’s win against Elmira was the 600th career win for Gallaudet head coach Lynn Ray Boren during his time at Gallaudet (17 seasons) and Model Secondary School for the Deaf (12 seasons). Boren is now 367-229 all-time (.615) at Gallaudet since the 2005 season to present.

UP NEXT
Gallaudet is back in action tomorrow (Saturday, Sept. 24) at noon as the Bison take on Lebanon Valley College on the second day of the Worthington Classic. GU will then play at 2 or 4 p.m. depending on its final pool play record.
