Bison split conference road matches Sunday as win streak gets snapped


LANCASTER, Pa. – Gallaudet University had its 10-match win streak snapped here Sunday as it split two United East Conference women’s volleyball matches on the road. The Bison fell to Penn St.-Berks in five sets; 25-21, 25-19, 18-25, 15-25, 14-16 before it defeated the host Chargers from Lancaster Bible College in four sets; 25-13, 25-17, 22-25, 25-22.

Gallaudet (16-11, 5-1 United East) jumped out to an early 2-0 lead over Penn St.-Berks (14-14, 6-0 United East) before the Nittany Lions roared back to take the final three sets. The fifth and final set was especially close as the two teams traded points and leads until the end. Sophomore opposite Emily Wright (Auburn, Calif.) recorded a career-high 24 kills while senior outside hitter Karita Lewis (Frederick, Md.) had a double-double with 18 kills and 15 digs. Fellow senior opposite Elina Rubinshteyn (Austin, Texas) added 12 kills while sophomore setter Emma Giuntoli (Austin, Texas) passed out 40 assists. 

GU was able to rebound with its 3-1 win over Lancaster Bible (8-14, 1-4 United East). Wright led the way with 19 kills while Lewis recorded a second double-double with 18 kills and 14 digs. Giuntoli passed out 41 assists and junior libero Mia Upchurch (Austin, Texas) added 22 digs. Upchurch surpassed 1,000 career digs with her performance on Sunday and now has 1,026 in her career. The Bison served up 10 service aces led by four from sophomore Sunita Schmidjorg (Austin, Texas).
