Blue Jays and Fords Sweep NCAA First Round Matchups

Johns Hopkins and Haverford both cruised to sweeps in the opening round of the NCAA Volleyball Tournament on Friday night to advance to Saturday’s second round. 

In Baltimore, top-ranked and unbeaten Hopkins (30-0) swept Cabrini (14-18) by a score of 25-19, 25-12, 25-16 in Gordfarb Gymnasium. Johns Hopkins improves to  extends its NCAA Division III record for consecutive wins to 65 and moves into the second round of the NCAA Tournament for the fourth consecutive time.

The Blue Jays hit .456 for the match with Eleni Panagopolous (9 kills / .667), Elayna Williams (9 kills / .571) and Sydney Portale (11 kills / .562) leading the way. Natalie Aston picked up 43 assists on 50 Blue Jay kills in the win and she added nine digs.

Johns Hopkins will play Springfield in Saturday’s second round at 5 p.m.

In Cambridge, Mass., Haverford (24-5) swept past UMass-Boston (14-13) (25-8, 25-17, 26-24) on the campus of MIT, giving the Fords their first NCAA Tournament victory since 2014. Dina Kosyagin tallied 11 kills to pace the Fords, while senior Sara Hunsberger added 28 assists. 

Haverford will take on host MIT at 4 p.m. in the second round.
